Two Recipes that Worked
Anyway, to my surprise Justin LOVED both and I thought it may be worth sharing it with you all. Yes, I was surprised because we can count on one hand how many dishes I've made that he truthfully enjoyed. If you know me well enough you know that I definitely lack in cooking skills and desire, plus it's hard to beat both of our moms' cooking!
Here's the first recipe:
Crock Pot Chicken Tortilla Soup
submitted by Erin from The Sisters Cafe
http://www.thesisterscafe.com/2008/12/crockpot-chicken-tortilla-soup-2
4 chicken breast halves
2 15-oz cans black beans, drained
2 15-oz cans Mexican stewed tomatoes
1 cup MEDIUM salsa (not mild)
1 4-oz can chopped green chilies
1 14 ½-oz can tomato sauce
Tortilla chips, not optional :)
2 cups grated cheddar cheese (I prefer sharp)
Combine all ingredients except chips and cheese in large slow cooker. Cover and cook on low 8 hours. Just before serving, remove chicken breasts and slice or shred into bite-sized pieces. Stir into soup. To serve, put a handful of chips in each individual soup bowl. Ladle soup over chips. Top with cheese.
I'm not sure what the consistency is supposed to be, but mine turned out a little thicker and almost like a chili. You can also find more info on it from readers' comments at the website I've provided above.
This second one is more like a snack or breakfast. You may have even already tried it, but it was new to me:
PB&J Banana Burritos
http://www.missionmenus.com/cookbook/PBJBananaBurritos
2 Mission® Medium/Soft Taco Flour Tortillas
4 tablespoons Jif® Creamy Peanut Butter
2 tablespoons Smucker’s® Strawberry Jam, Jelly, or Preserves
2 bananas, peeled
Place tortillas on a paper towel and microwave for 10 seconds. Spread 2 tablespoons peanut butter on each tortilla. Add 1 tablespoon jelly to each tortilla. Place the banana near the edge of the tortilla and fold up the ends of the tortilla. Roll-up and enjoy!
I didn't do the measurements, used TJ's organic PB, and used guava jelly instead (thanks to you peeps in HI that sent it to us!), but it was still yummy!
I know this isn't our usual post of adventures, but this past Saturday was a different kind of one...an adventure staying in. It was the first Saturday since we've moved here that we stayed in pretty much all day and relaxed. I was getting over a cold, it was chilly outside so we lounged around the house doing things we haven't really had time for. Justin actually planned to go golfing, but when he drove down the street it started drizzling so he came back home. So instead, we rested, read, finished chores, played cards, made cookie dough, organized the bills, Justin played some video games, and I made these two things. It seemed like a really long day, but I guess this is what happens when you don't have cable TV. Isn't that funny?!

A Welcomed Visit
Meet my friend, Debbie!
Bless her heart for driving through LA with traffic and aggressive drivers to come to Ventura! We did some of my favorite things: talk, eat, and shop!
We went shopping at the Camarillo outlets and the Pacific View Mall...or I should say she watched and helped me get some Christmas shopping done. She was looking for something specific and ended up not finding it, so she was very good and didn't spend a dime! I wish I could say I do that all the time. :)
Justin joined us for dinner at Souplantation and it was a real treat on a cold night! If you've never been to this chain restaurant, you should give it a try. They have a huge soup/salad bar with farm fresh vegetables and make everything from scratch. Pasta, breads, muffins, chocolate chip cookies, an ice cream machine are also some other things they have all at a very affordable price. That place is always yummy! When we first moved here, we ate here at least 3 times in a month. I would go there every night if Justin let me. Haha!
Sunday morning we got to take her to church with us. We've been visiting Community Bible Church of Ventura for a little over a month now and excited we got to share that experience with her! It was encouraging to hear her say she enjoyed it for the same reasons that has been bringing us back every Sunday.
We dropped Justin off at a park near our home, since he wanted to watch some serious soccer players. We got to watch Tyler (my cousin's older son) play soccer twice and it's been fun watching little 5 year-olds running around on the field. So, since then Justin's been wanting to watch serious soccer, if you know what I mean. :) While he watched these men play soccer Debbie and I went to have brunch at a cafe in Oxnard, Cafe Amri. Another place that was yummy! Their cinnamon rolls are to die for!!! I mean they were so good, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Of course we brought home all our leftovers for Justin to also enjoy.
This rounded up our time with Debbie. It was so fun catching up and sharing stories on how much our work environments changed from when we worked together in Hawaii. She's been such a good co-worker friend and I know that's hard to come by, always smiling and bubbly. We cried and laughed together about life throughout the short 3 years we've known each other, even though it seems like I knew her longer. We were grateful that we got to share with her a little bit of how our life here is in Ventura and welcome you too to come visit anytime!

Pumpkin Patch Fun
We visited this one in Santa Paula and was only 10 minutes away. It was a really nice day and the first time I could wear shorts and a sleeveless top since we moved here!
Justin & I quickly discovered that there's more at the pumpkin patch than just picking pumpkins! There are pony rides, petting zoos, crafts/antiques being sold, a farmer's market, food (and shaved ice), mazes, live bands, a pumpkin chucker, and hayrides. There was even a Harry Potter and a shark sighting! Leaving you with lots of pictures to make up for the lack of posting...

Jennie was Here!
The Getty Villa was in Pacific Palisades (or Malibu) and is one of the two locations of the Getty Museum. The Getty Villa museum was dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. It's comprised of Roman-inspired architecture and gardens, and boy did we feel like we were in Rome! It was so beautiful!
The best part of our day was just the time we had with Jennie! It was such a short reunion, but we were so grateful for it nonetheless! Jennie never fails to bring so much joy and laughter! She is one good story-teller. :) We always have a good time with her and this time was no different.
Of course we wished Davin and the kids were also here, but we're hoping for a "next time"!

Familiar Faces
For dinner we picked up steaks and potatoes and brought it back home to BBQ since there is a BBQ area right next to our apartment. Mason prepped some rib-eye steak and Grandma’s special potato recipe for dinner. It was so delicious.

Back to Work
Sorry for the lack of updates the past few days. I’ll do my best to summarize the past five days.
SUNDAY was such a blessing! We both were excited because we got to visit a new church – but this wasn’t just any church... On my last Sunday, at FBCPC, Pastor Sterling announced that it was my last Sunday and that I was leaving for California. Well, in the congregation that morning were a group of visitors. They approached me after service and asked where in California I was moving to. I told them Ventura County and that we were thinking of living in a city called Camarillo. All of them, with a big smile on their face said, “We’re from Camarillo!” At that point I was speechless. All I was thinking was how amazing God was to put these people in our path at the perfect time. This was not a coincidence. So, I got in touch with Jennifer and she invited us to Bethany Chapel, which is only a few miles from where we live. We were both encouraged by the message and by the members, who were very genuine and friendly. You just knew they loved Jesus. After church, we visited Uncle Wally, Aunty Carol, Kerry, David, Tyler, and Trevor in Simi Valley. I got to spend the afternoon playing with Tyler, their grandson. We had dinner at a Japanese restaurant where I ate sushi for the first time since I arrived. It hit the spot!
MONDAY meant that the “vacation” was over and the reality of work was going to begin…at least for me. Rae got the day off. She couldn’t do any work since she hadn’t gotten sworn in and didn’t have an ID card. The great thing for me was that I could work from home this week.
TUESDAY was inauguration day for Rae. We woke up early and drove down to Sepulveda where the main headquarters is for Rae’s job so that she could get sworn in by the director. Needless to say she was pretty nervous. All these new and unknown situations put her stomach in knots. I found a Starbucks in the area and got to work. I must say, the Starbucks here are really tech-friendly. They have long padded benches with a row of small round tables evenly spaced out and they have power outlets built into the benches so that each table has access to power. I already had my morning coffee, but felt bad for using their Wi-Fi and not buying anything so I got a short coffee to keep me going. After a few hours of work, Rae called to tell me she was ready to be picked up and then we drove back to Ventura which took about 45 minutes. Since it was time for lunch, we grabbed a bite to eat at Chick-Fil-A. Yum. Apparently this is the only one in Ventura County.
WEDNESDAY we officially became residents of California. I got my new license plates on Tuesday (it was sad taking the Hawaii plates off my car). I was planning on keeping my Hawaii license for as long as I could, but was told that I needed to get a California license because if I got pulled over with my CA plates and HI license I would get fined for not having a CA license. So, we crammed in some study time to review the CA laws and had to get used to the road signs here since a lot of them don’t exist or are ignored back home. After taking a few practice tests I felt ready, but Rae didn’t. Again, her stomach was in knots. She was starting to make me nervous. The written test consisted of 36 questions and this being our first time getting a license here we were allowed six incorrect responses on the test. Thankfully we both passed (that’s all you need to know...haha).
THURSDAY was the first normal day we’ve had since we arrived. I dropped Rae off at work in Port Hueneme which is about a 25 minute drive each way and then headed back home to start my day. I had a productive day since it was uninterrupted and didn’t have errands to run. I picked up Rae from work and then we went grocery shopping at Albertsons. There are three big grocery stores nearby our house – Von’s, Ralph’s, and Albertson’s. We’re still trying to figure out which will be our go-to grocery store. Any suggestions?
Since the weekend is right around the corner, we’re trying to figure out what to do. The trouble is narrowing it down. I’m leaning towards something that doesn’t involve too much driving since I’m the only one who can drive (Rae can’t drive manual). Maybe we’ll explore Ventura’s Main St.
Well, that’s all for now. Have a great weekend everyone!

Exploring Santa Barbara
That Saturday afternoon was our favorite day here in California so far!!! Santa Barbara is beautiful! We walked along State Street and did some shopping. Actually, only Justin bought some clothes and slippers and I was empty-handed...can you believe that? The architecture and decor along State Street reminded me of Italy! At the bottom of State Street was Stearns Wharf where there were so many birds, big and small. I couldn't help, but get freaked out a couple times when the larger birds came swooping down.
We read that on Sundays local Santa Barbara artists showcase their artwork and crafts along the wharf so we look forward to seeing that one day.
Leaving you with some pictures of our time in Santa Barbara:

Our New Home…For Now
Apparently Ventura is known as a laid back surf town, but we didn’t really get that vibe in the areas that we explored. In fact, the first thing that caught our attention was the fog and the cool temperatures. Speaking of the temperature here, it pretty much feels like you’re in AC as long as you’re not in the direct sunlight. During the day it’s roughly 75 degrees and at night it gets down to the high 50’s or low 60’s. However, once you leave the Ventura area or anywhere away from the coast, it quickly warms up.
Back to our living situation…we looked at about five different apartment complexes in Ventura and we narrowed it down to two. Choice #1 was conveniently located next to Rae’s bus stop and grocery stores and about $150 less than choice #2. However, the units were on the smaller side and the assigned parking stalls were not close to the unit which would make grocery runs a chore. Choice #2 was a few miles away from the conveniences of choice #1, but the complex was amazing! It was almost resort-like and relatively new. The unit we looked at was bigger by 100 square feet, but it felt 100 times bigger than choice #1. It also came with a single car garage and a really nice view. It felt like home and a weight lifted off of our shoulders.
So, to complicate things further, we discovered that another floor plan in the complex is going to be available shortly. The only problem is that we can’t see the unit until the current tenants vacate the unit. Based on the floor plan, it looks like a good unit because we’ll have a big deck at the entrance and no downstairs neighbors – just garages beneath us. Not to mention it’s 50 bucks cheaper than the place we’re currently living. So now we’re just living out of our suitcases and eating microwaveable meals out of paper plates with our plastic utensils until we know for certain whether we want to move to the new floor plan. This also means we’ll hold off on hooking up our TV and internet – Rae’s really sad about that.
For now, this is home:
